Obtaining a Private Pilot's Licence (Helicopters) PPL (H)
- Take an introductory flight with one of our instructors and commence your flight training.
- Obtain a student pilot's licence (SPL) before going solo.
- Fly a minimum 45 hrs and complete flying syllabus.
- Complete approximately 40 hours of Ground Instruction which covers the theory behind the practical and necessary to ensure passing Written Exams detailed below.
- Pass 5 written exams (4 of which are multiple choice - completed in Dublin on a bi-monthly basis).
- Air Law: complying with the rules and regulations of the air;
- Navigation and Meteorology: weather considerations and obtaining and understanding forecasts;
- Human Performance and Limitations: the effects of flight on the human body;
- Aircraft Technical: understandin aircraft systems;
- Flight Planning and Aircraft Performance: plan your route and fuel requirements.
- Obtain a class 2 medical with an approved medical examiner-similar to driving licence medical.
- If considering a career a Class 1 Medical will be required, this can be obtained through the Mater Hospital (Aeronautical) in Dublin.
- Fly once per week and complete your course in one year.
- Pass the skills test (Flight Test).
Gaining a Commercial Pilot's Licence:
Once completing a PPL course, we offer Self-Fly-Hire/Hour Building options for those interetsed in obtaining a Commercial Pilots Licence. Once logging the required 150 hours and completing the required written exams (ATPL/Frozen ATPL etc) you can then complete a 35 hour Commercial Fliying Course with Blue Star Helicopters. Interesting Information:
- Students must be at least 17 years before completing their first solo flight. However students may begin their training at the younger age of 16.
- Students must be at least 17 years before they can obtain their private pilots license. PPL (H).
- There is no upper age limit for Flight Training.
