SFAR 73

After a spate of R22 accidents (from when it was first certified onwards) the FAA issued a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) known as SFAR 73. SFAR 73 details training requirements for pilots of both R22 and R44 helicopters in order to maintain the safe operation of these helicopters. The IAA have no adopted SFAR 73 which requires all pilots of the Robinson R22 and R44 to be up-to-date with it.


Course Requirements
  •  Minimum age to begin course: 15
  •  Watch Robinsons SFAR 73 awareness video and discuss safety points with instructor in the following areas:
    • Energy management
    • Mast bumping
    • Low rotor RPM (blade stall)
    • Low G hazards, and
    • Rotor RPM decay.
  •  Undertake and pass SFAR 73 written test on awareness video
  •  1 hour flight to demonstrate topics discussed during the course

Student pilots must have completed SFAR 73 training within the previous 3 months before a Licence Skills Test (LST). Once a pilot’s licence is obtained the training must be completed every 12 months.
